2019 Homeschool Curriculum Expo

What is the Writing Through History series?

It’s an elementary writing curriculum based on the Charlotte Mason method.

I created this homeschool writing curriculum many years ago because I wanted a curriculum that would save me time. I also wanted a homeschool writing curriculum that would teach more than just writing, thereby saving my children time also.

To do that, I decided to organize this curriculum around the four year history cycle. I also decided to add a true handwriting font.

When my children used this homeschool writing curriculum, they studied:

composition through copywork and narration
history through historical narratives and primary source documents
handwriting through copywork
spelling and punctuation through studied dictation

This curriculum works!

Charlotte Mason used this method to teach during her time, and I’ve taken her approach and integrated into a history based curriculum that will accompany any history curriculum.

If you’re a busy homeschool mom that is teaching elementary writing, then keep reading. This homeschool writing curriculum does more than focus on writing alone. It teaches writing from living books. It supplements history with historical narratives, and primary source documents. It teaches handwriting with a true handwriting font.

How is it organized?

It’s organized to be an open and go curriculum, usable with any history program.

All Level 1 books in this curriculum contain historically relevant reading selections.

They are divided into four chapters:

  • short stories
  • time period tales
  • poetry
  • cultural tales

There are two writing models following each reading selection. One or both can be used for copywork. If the student is ready, the second model can be used for dictation.

In the Level 1 books, children copy the first model in an area that has ruled lines below each word they copy. The second writing model is written at the top of the net page, and is followed by ruled lines in the lower half of the page. The second model requires students to write from memory.

All Level 2 books contain historically relevant reading selections.

They are also divided into four chapters:

  • short historical narratives
  • excerpts from primary source documents
  • poetry
  • cultural tales

In the Level 2 books, students in grades 3 to 5 are encouraged to copy paragraph sized models written in either print or cursive. In the appendix, the level 2 books contain additional models which may be used for studied dictation.

  7. I would LOVE to create my kids’ portfolios + artwork books with a binder as opposed to a huge chunky 3-ring one (where everything tears easily).

  8. I have looked at these for years, but have never bought one. I have so many ebooks and workbooks that I print out and put in binders for my children and this would be an amazing tool to have.

  21. I would love to win this to help our homeschooling community. We offer all our classes as not-for-profit as we felt that many of the other options in our area, while amazing… were too pricey for some families. I felt that there were too many families on one income that weren’t able to participate in local classes and activities because of that. This would be a real blessing for our year ahead. We are planning a state study! Thanks for always having great information and encouraging posts!

  22. A binding machine would be an amazing homeschool tool!
