Harlow’s Harvest: My Favorite Homeschool Elective for Ages 4-15 {GIVEAWAY}

I am a huge fan of teaching life skills in your homeschool, skills that prepare children for the real world before and after they are on their own. Skills like sewing, managing money, and cooking are crucial to a child becoming a well-rounded individual. Remember when public school used to include home economics, shop, and other such valuable classes?

My kids are HUGE fans of subscription boxes. Kids love getting mail every month that is just for them and gives them a fun hands-on activity. However, it is also important to me that what ‘s in the box has some value. Our latest find is Harlow’s Harvest! Harlow’s Harvest is a monthly cooking kit for children ages 4-15. If you have followed me on Instagram, you know that I have a young chef in my home. My youngest daughter, Nevaeh, loves being in the kitchen, so this monthly subscription box was right up her alley! BUT- Harlow’s Harvest doesn’t just cover cooking skills, oh no, they place a heavy emphasis on history, geography, STEM, and budgeting too.

What comes inside Harlow’s Harvest box?

Inside each monthly Harlow’s Harvest kit you will find:

  • A fun and useful kitchen tool designed for young chefs
    Harlow's Harvest- The FUN Homeschool Cooking Elective for Ages 4-15.
  • A collectible pin your child can add to his/her apron
  • Shopping list for the grocery store that fosters budgeting skills
  • A related hands-on kitchen science experiment
    Harlow's Harvest- The FUN Homeschool Cooking Elective for Ages 4-15.
  • 3 spill-proof laminated recipe cards which include nutrition facts, ingredients, tools, step by step instructions with images, and related education. {3 different recipes in each box. In our box the recipes were Balsamic Strawberry Toasted Crostini, Happy Lettuce Wraps, and Breakfast Sushi.}

  • Food and kitchen education through the Chef’s Academy
    Harlow's Harvest- The FUN Homeschool Cooking Elective for Ages 4-15.

The recipe cards are what really has set Harlow’s Harvest apart from the other kid’s cooking boxes we’ve tried. These tri-fold cards are high quality, laminated, and have bright eye-catching colors and images. The ingredients, tools, and instructions are clearly laid out and explained in such a way that it allows your children to gain confidence in their kitchen abilities! Not to mention the fact that Harlow’s Harvest does an amazing job at bringing food and culinary arts into other subjects and areas of their lives. Our April box had an insert on Earth Day which was very applicable because our food sources are very dependent on a healthy Earth!

You won’t find food items in the box, you will want to pick up your own fresh ingredients at the grocery store to make the recipes included. Grocery shopping is another one of those life skills that our children need. Shopping for your own ingredients makes it easy to make any substitutions that are required as well.

Who designed Harlow’s Harvest?

Harlow’s Harvest is born from the heart of Harlow, who at just 7 years old showed a passion for healthy cooking. Her endeavor was backed by supermom Ashley, who is the founder and CEO of Farmbox Direct. Together, they developed Harlow’s Harvest!

Who is a Harlow’s Harvest subscription geared toward?

The box is recommended for kids ages 4-15.  We have also tried out a few other cooking boxes for kids and have found that Harlow’s Harvest tends to the only option that appeals to children at the upper end of the age range as well as the littles.  Harlow’s Harvest is the perfect gift for children in your life! It is a sweet gift that will keep on giving and brings a useful skill into a child’s life.

My thoughts on our experience with Harlow’s Harvest:

First of all, I will start off by saying that my daughter is 13 years old which the upper limit of the age recommendation for Harlow’s Harvest. We were super intrigued when we learned that Harlow’s Harvest was recommended for children up to 15 years old. We had tried at few of the other kids cooking boxes on the market and felt that they were definitely geared toward much younger children. My daughter isn’t a rookie in the kitchen. She takes courses at the International Culinary Institute and definitely has a passion and gift for cooking. So, I’ll just sum it up to say that we had very high expectations for Harlow’s Harvest and I’m happy to say that we were not disappointed. Though the names of some of the dishes were a bit juvenile {Happy Lettuce Wraps}, we were pleasantly surprised at the wide variety of flavors and textures included in the recipes. My daughter was also incredibly excited to find that in addition to food recipes, her box also included a slime recipe!!
