Welcome to this week’s edition of Free Curriculum Friday! This week, I’ve teamed up with Anne from Learning Table and she has an amazing pre-reading skill bundle for your little ones! Check it out…

Preschool Reading Skills

Pre-readers can begin learning valuable skills that will help them decode words and sentences later on. Wordless picture books offer so many ways to share a love of reading with a child. These wordless books rely on pictures to tell the story and invite kids to use their imagination to ‘read’ the story.

Pre-readers, non-native language speakers, struggling readers, reluctant readers, and even experienced readers alike can get lost in the wonderful worlds of these books. And, they are really fun to read aloud as you compose the story to young listeners.

Guess what? These wordless books are great for teaching reading skills:

  • understanding narrative structure, plot, character, and setting
  • moving from left to right
  • reading comprehension
  • paying attention to detail
  • interpreting the motives of characters
  • understanding the emotion of a scene
  • predicting events
  • making connections to real life
  • learning new vocabulary
  • discovering context clues

  1. This bundle will be a wonderful tool for my just turned 3-yr old. She looks forward to hearing at least 5 books per day and I catch her “pretending” to read in her room with her dollies as her audience. She has a strong foundation so far especially listening to her 5-yr old brother learning to read new words daily. I didn’t know about all these fabulous tools for my son so starting my daughter early!! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
