Homeschool portfolio. Those are two words that up to this point in our homeschooling journey, I haven’t given much thought to.

I always sort of assumed that since my state didn’t require me to maintain a homeschool portfolio, I would wait until my children were closer to high school age before I would start worrying about keeping up with a portfolio. But this year, in my quest to become more organized within our homeschool, I’ve been playing around with the idea of keeping a homeschool portfolio for both of my daughters. The lazy mom in me is screaming “why do you want to make extra work for yourself?!“, but I know there are reasons that I NEED to keep a portfolio {that have nothing to do with state standards, or college applications}.

So what are they? What in the world could possibly be a good reason for an already stretched too thin homeschool mom to create yet another job for herself? Keep reading…after I tell you all of the reasons why, I’m giving you a FREE Homeschool Portfolio Pack that makes it all super simple!

Here are 7 reasons you need to keep a homeschool portfolio:

1. Record memories– believe it or not, Mama, there will come a point where your children are all grown up and they will thank you for your sacrifice in homeschooling them. A homeschool portfolio is a great gift to your child. As they browse through their old portfolios and you hear “Hey, Mom! Remember in third grade when we almost destroyed the kitchen making this volcano?”, all of the hard work will be worth it!

2. Track progress– this is one of the aspects I’m most excited about. I love to reach the end of a school year and think back to the beginning and see just how much progress my girls have made. The problem is many times, I can’t remember just where we began. A portfolio will make it so much easier to track their progress. Not only will I use this at the end of the year, but also during my mid-year review.

3. Evaluate trends- evaluating trends in your homeschool is a great way to step back and evaluate what’s working and what isn’t. This will help you in planning future homeschool years, and will let you know when and how to tweak your current plans. A homeschool portfolio is a great tool in helping you with these evaluations.

4. Evidence- Did you know? This homeschooling thing, it really works!! In the unfortunate event that you ever have to prove to someone that your children are actually learning, your homeschool portfolio is your proof.

5. Encourgement– And then, there are those days where you need to see the proof that your children are learning. On those days when it’s hard to remember why you even started this journey, pull out the portfolios, celebrate your accomplishments and see that you really are making a difference in the life of your child. This is also great encouragement for a friend, especially one considering homeschooling.

6. A way to keep family involved– whether it’s a dad who spends long hours at work, or grandparents or other family members who want to be involved, but aren’t there with your children everyday, a homeschool portfolio is an excellent way for them to see what your children have been up to.

7. It’s easy! Really. It is! I even have a way to make it even easier for you! I’ve teamed up with my friend Erin from Homeschool Balance. She created this amazing 35+ page Homeschool Portfolio Pack and is giving it to my readers for FREE! Yes, FREE!
