If you are looking for religious homeschool books that feature courageous women in history, Johanna and Henriette Kuyper: Daring to Change Their World by Abigail van der Velde is a great place to start.

Synopsis of this Book:

As the 1800s draw to a close and a new century begins, two women actively engage Dutch Society. Joanna is a traditional pastor’s wife, eager to inspire and encourage her husband, the future Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Abraham Kuyper. Henriette is an international traveler, champion of women’s suffrage, and wartime correspondent—among much else! Both mother and daughter risk reproach and defy custom—changing their world for good and for God’s sake.

The Chosen Daughters series highlights the lives of ordinary women who by God’s grace accomplish extraordinary things.

Johanna and Henriette Kuyper: Daring to Change Their World takes place in the Netherlands, and Ms. van der Velde does an amazing job of painting the scene and time period. The story begins with Johanna, a strong wife and mother who loved the Lord as much as she did her family.

Johanna took her father’s advice in supporting her husband, careful not to lose herself while she played the role of dutiful wife. She also used her unique personality and abilities to help others, and passed this important role down to her daughter, Henriette.

The Kuyper family enjoyed reading this biographical fiction novel about their relatives. Joanna’s great-nephew, Hein Schaaij, stated, “There were moments when I had the impression that I was reading a story of my parents’ family—how I was raised. I enjoyed reading this very much.”

With the realism of the author’s story between the covers of this book, it’s a great read for middle or high schoolers studying heroic women in history. This story shows both a mother and daughter uses God’s grace and faith to make changes in tradition and accomplish amazing feats to better the lives of those around them.

It also helps to develop character, by using the unique talents and traits God has given us to honor Him. You can use Johanna and Henriette Kuyper: Daring to Change Their World by Abigail van der Velde as both a history lesson and one about self-growth and self improvement!

My tween daughters and I read this book aloud and it was greatly enjoyed by all of us. I cannot wait to read the entire Chosen Daughters series in our homeschool this year.
