Create a memorable first day back to homeschool with these great traditions

We make a big deal out of the first day of a new school year in our home. I’m always excited about starting back {mostly because I’ve missed our routine}, and so I want the kids to also be excited about beginning. In order to create excitement, we’ve established a few traditions for the first day of a new school year. We all look forward to these fun activities and it starts the year off on a positive note.

A few of our first day of school traditions:

  • A special breakfast- I always ask our daughters what they would like for breakfast and try to make it fun. It might be pancakes with sprinkles or cinnamon buns. Just a special treat!
  • First day of school photos- We always take photos on the first day of school. This creates a sweet memento that will be cherished for years to come. {I’ll be sharing our photos for this year soon!!}
  • Special new school supplies- each year as I’m shopping for school supplies, I try to pick up something fun {a pretty binder, a sparkly pencil, etc} that I give to the girls on the first day of school.
  • A lunch date at a favorite restaurant.
  • A special note for each child just telling them how proud I am of them and how excited I am to see them grow in the coming year.
  • A trip to the local book store to pick up their choice of book for reading time.
  • A special dessert at dinner.

This is how our family celebrates the first day of a new school year. Do you have any special first day of school traditions?

  1. We started homeschooling today. I made a special breakfast this morning and we took first day of school photos. I’m sure we’ll add more traditions as we go. 🙂

    1. Special breakfasts are so fun!! 🙂 I hope you had a great first day!

  2. When I was a kid (in public school) we had a night before the first day of school tradition. My dad, who could almost never be found in the kitchen, made homemade milkshakes. I have carried on this tradition with my kids but I’m looking to start some new traditions now that we are homeschooling (we took our kids out of public school last year). Thankfully, I have a few weeks to figure it out.

    1. Awesome!! Good luck, it is a great decision!

  3. We go out for ice cream and we go to the local educational store to pick something out…preferably educational, but fun at the same time.

  4. I think this year we might have to go to Krispy Kreme for breakfast doughnuts! Also, each of my boys has a school scrapbook (a pre-made one with three to four pages for each with fill-in-the-blank info, places for pictures, and a pocket) and we will work on finishing last year’s and starting this year’s on our first day, including taking a picture for this year. Then we’ll have our morning meeting where all of us do “together stuff” – Bible study, memory work, character development, etc – and then we’ll just introduce what the kids will be studying this year, subject by subject – just an overview. Then maybe we’ll do something terrifically fun after that . . . go to the pool, go bowling, something!

  5. We go on a special field trip while everyone else loads up on the big yellow bus. Aquarium, beach, or zoo just to name a few. We will also do lunch with Daddy out at a restaurant. Then the seat work begins the next day.
