If you’ve been homeschooling for more than 5 minutes, you know that this homeschooling business is no joke. It isn’t for the faint of heart.

Homeschooling is a daily sacrifice and declination of the status quo. It’s waking up each and every morning and determining to give your children the best.

But it isn’t always easy, and after five years of homeschooling {and retaining my sanity!}, I’ve gleaned a few messages that I need to share with you. If you’re a homeschooling mom, take a few moments to put down whatever it is you’re working on and read this post…then share it with your homeschooling friends. They’ll thank you, I promise!

10 Things Every Homeschooling Mom Needs to Hear Right Now

10 Things Every Homeschool Mom Needs to Hear Right Now:

1. You are making a difference. I know many days it doesn’t seem like it…especially those days when both teacher and student are crying over a math problem, but sweet Mama, you are making a difference. You’re raising world changer, and by refusing the status quo for your child, you are sending a message with which the world cannot compete. Each day that you wake up and continue to homeschool your child, you are telling her that even though it’s hard and a different path that many don’t understand, God has called you to a specific mission, and you’re being obedient. You aren’t settling for what this world {or the public school system} has to offer, you are made for more.

2. Coffee is your friend. Enough said.

3. The housework will wait. I promise. That load {or five!!} of unfolded laundry isn’t going to get impatient and fold itself. It will be right there waiting for you when you get around to it. Those sticky floors will be there tomorrow. Taking the time to sit on the couch with your child and watch his eyes light up as he sounds out the word cat for the first time will not. Choose wisely.

4. 16,380. That is the number of hours you receive by making the choice to homeschool your child. Or, to put it in a different perspective, those who do not homeschool are losing almost two years of their child’s life!! Do the math. Homeschooling offers a family a gift that nothing else can touch…the gift of time!

5. That child who seems like he will never learn to read? He will. Are you going through the days of long division he**? Those will end too. One day, they’ll wake up and it will suddenly click. Press on!

6. You are not alone. Find a fellow homeschooling mom who gets it and encourage one another. Vent together. Pray together. We are all in this journey together. If you don’t have a homeschooling friend to chat with, email me at UpsideDownHomeschooling@gmail.com. I would be happy to talk with you.

But since we’re talking about homeschool communities….

7. That mom in your homeschool group who seems like she has it all together… you know the one whose three year old is reading at an eighth grade level, who makes gourmet meals every night, who has a spotless home…THAT one?! Yeah, she’s really a mess just like you. Don’t let her fool you.

8. Cereal for dinner has never ruined a childhood. The struggle is real and some days, we just cannot get it all done…and that is okay! Did you keep the kids alive? Is your house still standing? Does your husband know you love him? If so, it sounds to me like you made it through the day! Let’s celebrate…break out those cereal bowls!

9. Tomorrow is a new day. Praise Jesus! If today is one of those days, then stop. Pack up the books. Take off the teacher hat, and simply embrace being a mommy today. Remember you are a mother first. Don’t force a bad day, have the courage and humility to say “enough is enough” and try again tomorrow.

10. God has equipped you for this journey. You just have to trust Him. He’s called you and He will not forsake you. On those days when it just seems too hard, when math has lasted for six hours, it’s 8pm and you’re still in your pajamas, the house is a wreck, and you had cereal for dinner {again}…cry out to the One who never leaves your side. Fall into His arms and let Him whisper His promises into your heart. He created you for this journey. You can do this.
