As a parent, I struggle with finding fun and educational gifts for my children for Christmas. Obviously, I want to purchase them gifts that they will have fun with, but if I can sneak in a little bit of learning while they’re having fun then we both win, right?!
Board games are a favorite around our house. You’ll often find the four of us sitting on our living room floor having an all out battle over a board game. Yes, we’re just a little competitive. I was so excited when I learned about Simply Fun!
Simply Fun is a company that understands the importance of learning through play. They are truly a homeschooling parent’s best friend.
From their website:
Our award-winning products (over 50 awards in 2012) meet the needs of today’s parents to connect with their children, and participate in their learning not as tutors but as partners. Play is such an important part of the academic, social and emotional learning processes that SimplyFun games are now finding their way into classrooms and learning programs across the country.
My family and I recently had the awesome opportunity to review the game, Get 4 and Score!
Here is how it works:
Flip over the top card from each of the Four Letter Card decks and roll the dice to reveal their value. Reveal the top category card and flip over the timer. Players race to write four answers associated with the category and starting with the letter on each of the cards. Players reveal their answers and score points based on the dice rolled. After 10 rounds, the player with the highest score wins!
For example: if the category is “female names” and the letter cards show A, B, C, and D. You might write “Alice, Barbara, Carrie, and Diane”. You have to think quickly and write your answers before time runs out!
This game was designed for 2-8 players, ages 8 and up.
I love this game because it encourages quick thinking, increases vocabulary, and even encourages some mental math skill when the child is figuring up their score. We even took it a step further and made a rule that all answers must be spelled correctly in order to receive points. Yes, I’m tricky like that!
Seriously though, this game is a fun addition to our homeschooling lesson plans. On those days when you’re bogged down with the workbooks, this game would be a fun way to lighten up the day while continuing to learn!
If you’re looking for fun AND educational Christmas gifts, I highly suggest checking out Simply Fun!
