If you visit this site regularly, it is safe to say that you have chosen to be frugal. However, sometimes in our efforts to be frugal and purchase items at low prices, we actually cost ourselves more money in the long run.
Whether you home school or not, we have all become comfortable with purchasing items online in our attempts to pay less. Ebay, Amazon, and just purchasing from our favorite store online save us gasoline for our cars and, in many cases, they save us from paying for shipping. However, an item that comes with free shipping may not necessarily come cheaper than a product where a shipping cost is involved.
We currently have an Amazon Prime account which not only allows us to stream a selection of free movies but also gives us free shipping on many items through Amazon. Yet, there have been times where I have found that the Prime items I was looking to purchase actually cost more than the same product that I had to pay shipping for.
Always be sure to find out what the retail price of an item is before you go to Amazon, Ebay, or another site. Sometimes, making a quick stop at a store while doing your other errands can be cheaper than making your purchase online….. unless avoiding the hassle of crowds and traffic is worth a little extra cost.
I am one for scouring the clearance rack at clothing stores, but sometimes there is a good reason for a dress being on the clearance rack. I once purchased a black dress from the clearance rack for $9.99. It was beautiful, but there were deodorant marks all over the dress. I purchased it, but because the dress was a “dry clean only” dress, I had to have it cleaned before I could wear. it. The dress ended up costing me $17 after the cost of the dry cleaning. It was still not a bad price, but not as great as I had originally thought.
How many times have you tried to use a coupon only to find that it had already expired (the day before) or it would not cover what you were trying to purchase? Please tell me I am not the only one! If you are dining at a restaurant, ask the waitress before she takes your order exactly what your restaurant coupon covers. This way you will know that your meal will cost exactly what you expected it to without being surprised at the end when the bill comes. If a coupon has expired to an item you wanted to purchase, don’t be afraid to politely decline purchasing the item. So many times people purchase things because they feel badly saying no at the check out counter.
The next time you find yourself in one of these situations, I hope you hear my voice saying Watch out! to help you avoid overpaying for a purchase.
