Words of Hope

Words. We are inundated with them every day. Music, books, radio, billboards, phones, blogs…

Communication. We humans thrive on it. If we haven’t heard from a friend in a while, we call her. When we know someone is going through a tough time, we write a note of encouragement.

hope

Struggles. Either you, or someone you know is going through a hard period of life right now. Fear, betrayal, sadness, grief…

Hope. We all want it. Many times it feels just out of our grasp. Just around the corner. Maybe tomorrow…just. hold. on.  one. more. day.

I think it is fantastic that God chose to communicate to us through words. Not only words that have been written down, but words straight from His own mouth. God-breathed words.

Look at these amazing words:

We also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. ~ Romans 5:3-5

If you notice, there are some words that are linked together. They progress like this:

EXULT in tribulations –> perseverance –> proven character –> HOPE!

What do the words mean? {THIS is the fun part! Let’s unpack the words!}

Exult: In Greek, the word is kauchaomai, which means “to boast” such as the boasting Paul describes in 2 Corinthians chapters 10 and 11.

boast1Perseverance: Hupomeno means, “under, to abide and remain”.

Proven character: The word dokime means, “matured, put to the test and passed.”

So how do we receive HOPE?

If we boast in Jesus during our hard times, and we abide and remain in those circumstances if needed, then we will mature in our faith. We will have been put to the test and passed with flying colors! Knowing we have passed the test builds our HOPE in Jesus and the eternal life that He brings. And that HOPE will never disappoint.

boast2But get this! {I’m so excited! The word of God is SO good!!}

“And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” ~ 2 Corinthians 12:9

“Boast about your weaknesses”!! Exult in your tribulations! Persevere!! Allow the Lord to prove your character!! He will give you HOPE! The struggles may not get any easier, but God will give you the grace that you need to persevere.

That word, dwell, means “to tabernacle”. During your weakest times, God throws His tabernacle, a tent of power, right over you and dwells within and around you. It is a tent that God never takes down. He continually leaves it up. He continuously stays with you!

Our HOPE is in Jesus.

The song is correct. When I am weak, He is strong.

The Bible tells you so.
