What Do I Do When the Curriculum isn't Working

You’ve spent hours browsing vendor booths at a homeschool convention. You’ve read countless reviews. And finally, you’ve spent your entire homeschool budget on the perfect curriculum. You are sure your children will love it. You’ve envisioned their smiling faces eagerly completing their schoolwork….

But now, a few weeks into the year and the smiles have been replaced with tears. No one is having any fun.

As hard as you try (and as much as you hate to admit), your perfect curriculum just isn’t working for your family.

What do you do now?

Here are some options:

  • Give up the idea of perfect. There is no perfect curriculum. It definitely isn’t a one size fits all approach.
  • Try to determine exactly what isn’t working. Is it the teaching method? Does it not fit your child’s learning style? Is it boring? Ask your children for their input too!
  • Can it be adapted? Are there certain aspects that are working or that your children enjoy? Can you use what you’ve got and modify it to make it work {supplement with another program, substitute certain aspects, etc}?
  • Contact the publisher. Tell them what is going on. They might have some suggestions for you!
  • Swap it with another homeschool family. What doesn’t work for one family, might be a perfect match for another. Here are a few online curriculum swap groups:
    **The Homeschooler’s Curriculum Swap
    **Educator’s Exchange
    **Homeschool Shopper
    **Homeschool Classifieds
    **Catholic Curriculum Swap
  • Sell it, and put your money into something that will work better for your family.

Above all, don’t continue to force a curriculum that isn’t working. For your sanity and the peace of your homeschool, prayerfully ask God to lead you to the “perfect-for-your-family” curriculum. It’s out there. It might have to be adjusted to fit your needs, but rest assured that there is a curriculum that your family will love!

What have you done when your curriculum wasn’t working? Did you push your way through the year or give it up for something better?

  1. Gosh I’ve changed our curriculum more this year than I can shake a stick at. I don’t think I will have to as much next year since my kids have similar learning styles so what I use for my older daughter I hope I can use for my son.

    1. That is great, Nita! My girls have completely different learning styles, so even though they are in the same grade, I am continuously having to make adaptations to the programs.

  2. This is the first year (fourth year homeschooling) that our curriculum IS working for us. We are using Easy Peasy, (plus a few supplements) and LOVE it! My daughter has discovered that she actually enjoys math, history, and writing stories! I don’t think there’s a subject that she’s not enjoying. 🙂

  3. If it isn’t working – pack it up and get it out. Sell it, donate it – or just put it away for another year…but, don’t keep trying to fix something that can’t be fixed because it isn’t a good fit!
