Nature study is all the buzz in the homeschool community for a great reason…it makes a big difference!
How Does Nature Study Make A Difference?
In more ways than you might imagine!
✔ It takes place outside.
Getting outdoors not only provides fresh air, sunshine, and exercise – it also offers your children a change of pace from lessons as usual. Each of these go a long way in promoting positive homeschooling attitudes.
✔ It’s fun and interesting.
I don’t know too many children who wouldn’t love to run, jump, and climb during school. What’s more, most children look forward to the discovery-based aspect of nature study.
✔ It teaches real science.
Inherently, nature study touches on plant and animal sciences (biology) and earth sciences. What you might not know is how often you can touch on chemistry and physics as well. I call nature study our “outdoor science lab” because we’re in the field learning, touching, experimenting, and noting observations.
✔ It increases observation and discrimination skills.
Because nature study is so deeply rooted in investigation and discovery, the science skills of observation and discrimination are highly practiced and fine-tuned through activities like comparisons and nature journaling.
✔ It works for all learning styles.
Whether you have children who need to touch things or move; children who prefer to read or write; or even prefer charts or drawing – nature study is easily adapted to all learning styles!
✔ It easily ties into other subjects.
You might already know that writing and drawing go alongside nature journaling. You might be surprised, though, to know how easy you can add reading, math, geography, history, poetry, music, and art into your nature studies. They all go together like peanut butter and jelly.
✔ It encourages a belief in the Creator.
There is simply no denying the Creator after observing His incredible beauty and complexity in nature. To watch the seasons change with certainty throughout creation year in and year out is breathtaking proof of His promises and tender care. Nature study is a great way to draw children toward the Lord!
Why Is Nature Study Hard to Do?
“I have no idea what to do on our nature walks, so my kids are bored to pieces.”
I hear this comment all the time and I fully understand the frustration. When we first started nature walks, they were fairly boring and unfruitful.
I wasn’t prepared, therefore my children had no real objective.
While nature hikes are perfectly fine without objectives, nature lessons (the kind we’re counting as “school”) should have at least some goal(s) in mind. When there is a goal in mind, your children have a purpose. And, when your children have a purpose, there’s no limit to the learning that can happen!
Even with objectives, it doesn’t necessarily mean your children will love nature study. But, a little pre-planning can turn bored kids into nature lovers pretty easily…
