Get your Pictures Right
Designers have an exact height that they hang the center of a piece of art. 57″ happens to be the average eye level for humans, and that’s where the center of your picture should be placed. If you’re creating a gallery wall, the center of your focal point can be at 57″, or the group of art’s center can be 57″ to be pleasing to the eye. This may look low at first, but guess what? You’ve gotten used to hanging your art too high!
Get your Curtains Right
Yes, there’s also a formula for hanging curtains, and it’s pretty easy! The height of the curtain rod should be hung about 1/2 (or more) the distance from the window to the ceiling. The curtain rod should extend no less than 10″ on either side of the window, and even up to 12″ for larger windows.
Curtain length is an important factor in the decor of a room. Curtains should be almost floor length, either just touching the floor or no more than an inch above the floor. In some very formal spaces, draperies can pool on the floor for a dramatic effect.
How to Choose an Area Rug
A common home decorating mistake home-owners make is to buy area rugs that are too small for their space. A dining room rug should be large enough for the chairs to slide out easily without going off of the rug. In a living room seating area, choose a rug that the entire furniture grouping can sit on, or at least the front half of each sofa or seat.
Lastly, be Odd
Odd number groupings seem to be more pleasing to the eye. Whether you’re decorating a shelf, your mantel, or accessories on a side table, choose an odd number of accessories of different sizes. Layer them if possible for an interesting effect.
Home decorating is a very personal experience in that everyone has their own style, color choices and opinion. Design a space that is both functional and beautiful so it’s a room where you’ll want to spend your time.
